Lady Justice Maureen Onyango, Former Principal Judge, ELRC

 

LADY JUSTICE MAUREEN ONYANGO, ELRC

Lady Justice Maureen Onyango is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 20 years’ experience in the legal profession. She holds a Bachelors of Law (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Kenya School of Law.

 

She practiced for two years before venturing into corporate world working as Chief Legal Officer at the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA), Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and thereafter, at the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE). Justice Onyango practiced in the former Industrial Court for more than 12 years and has served as a consultant and trainer in Labour Laws and Employment and Industrial Relations. She was part of the taskforce that reviewed the Labour Laws that were enacted in 2007.

Justice Onyango was appointed judge of the Employment and Labour Relations Court in July 2012 and posted to Nairobi where she served for two before moving to Kisumu, where she worked for three years. On November 6, 2017, she was elected by her colleagues as the Principal Judge of the ELRC. She is the chairperson of the Rules Committee, Bar-Bench, Leadership and Management Teams and the Court Users Committee for the court.

The judge has been involved in many charity walks and was awarded a gold medal at the 2017 Judiciary Sports Day.  She supports various projects for the needy. Judge Onyango has a passion in teaching with special interest in Human Resource and Labour related matters. She is currently pursuing an MA in Human Rights.
