Best performing courts and administrative units, 2016 – 2017

 

Court of Appeal

Malindi Court of Appeal

Recognition award for overall best performing Court of Appeal.  This Court achieved a performance grade of “Good”. The court reduced case backlog by 62 %. The bench comprised of Hon. Justice Alnashir Visram– Presiding judge and Hon. Lady Justices Martha Koome and Wanjiru Karanja in the period under review. This Court is Malindi Court of Appeal.

 

 

High Court

Kericho High Court

Recognition award for overall best performing High Court in the caseload category of 200 cases and below. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”.  The court achieved judges’ productivity of 221 cases. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Lady Justice Mumbi Ngugi. This Court is Kericho High Court.

 

 Voi High Court

Recognition award for overall best performing High Court in the caseload category of between 201 and 500 cases. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”.  The court achieved judges’ productivity of 331 cases. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Lady Justice Jacqueline Kamau. This Court is Voi High Court.

 

Machakos High Court

Recognition award for overall best performing High Court in the caseload category of above 500 cases. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. The court achieved a case clearance rate of 583 %. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Lady Justice Pauline Nyamweya. This Court is Machakos High Court.

 

 

Employment & Labour Relations Court

Nakuru Employment and Labour Relations Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Employment and Labour Relations Court. It achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. The court achieved 100 % in hearing and determining Causes Disputes within 360 days.  During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Justice Radido Stephen Okiyo.  This Court is Nakuru Employment and Labour Relations Court.

 

 

Environment and Land Court

Kisii Environment and Land Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Environment and Land Court. It achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. The court achieved a case clearance rate of 173 %. The Court was presided by Hon. Justice John M. Mutungi. This Court is Kisii Environment and Land Court.

 

 

 

Magistrates’ Courts

 

Mpeketoni Magistrates’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Magistrates’ Court in the caseload category of 500 cases and below. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”.  The court achieved judicial officers’ productivity of 414 cases. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Victor Asiyo. This Court is Mpeketoni Magistrates’ Court.

 

Wajir Magistrates’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Magistrates’ Court in the caseload category of between 501 and 1,000 cases. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Amos Kiprop Makoros. This Court is Wajir Magistrates’ Court.

 

 Kangema Magistrates’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Magistrates’ Court in the caseload category of between 1,001 and 2,000 cases. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. The court reduced case backlog by 75%. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Jared O. Magori. This Court is Kangema Magistrates’ Court.

 

Embu Magistrates’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Magistrates’ Court in the caseload category of over 2000 cases. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. The court reduced case backlog by 54%.  During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Maxwell Gicheru. This Court is Embu magistrates’ Court.

 

 

Makadara Magistrates’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Magistrates’ Court in the category of courts handling criminal matters only. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. The court reduced case backlog by 19%. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Emily Ominde. This Court is Makadara Magistrates’ Court.

 

 

Tononoka Magistrates’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Magistrates’ Court in the category of courts handling children’s matters only. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. The court achieved judicial officers’ productivity of 193 cases. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Viola Yator. This Court is Tononoka Magistrates’ Court.

 

 

 Kadhis’ Courts

Murang’a Kadhis’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Kadhis’ Court in the caseload category of 100 cases and below. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Malampu Abdilatif Silau. This Court is Muranga Kadhis’ Court.

  1. Takaba Kadhis’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Kadhis’ Court in the caseload category of above 100 cases. The court achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Ahmed Isaack Maalim. This Court is Takaba Kadhis’ Court.

 

Lamu Kadhis’ Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Kadhis’ Court in productivity. The court achieved a Kadhis’ productivity of 326 cases. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Hamisi M. Mshali. This Court is Lamu Kadhis’ Court.

 

Milimani Commercial Court

Recognition award for overall best performing court in reduction of case backlog. The Court reduced case backlog by 3,278 cases. During the review period, the Court was presided by Hon. Peter Gesora. This Court is Milimani Commercial Court.

 

Administrative Units

Directorate of Internal Audit and Risk Management

Recognition award best Performing Directorate and achieving “Very Good” performance. This Directorate audited 20 court stations, revenue and deposits management at the Judiciary headquarters and continued with monitoring the implementation of internal audit report recommendations. This Directorate is Internal Audit and Risk Management.

 

Office of the Registrar Supreme Court

Recognition award for overall best performing Office of Registrar. The Office achieved a performance grade of “Very Good”.  The Office of the Registrar facilitated simplification of Supreme Court procedures and introduced a case management system. This Office is the Office of the Registrar, Supreme Court.

 

 

Semi- Autonomous Judiciary Agencies

National Council for Law Reporting

Recognition award for achieving “Very Good” performance. The Council published judicial decisions received on www.kenyalaw.org, Quarterly bench bulletin, Kenya Law Reports 2013, and the Grey Book 2016. This Council is the National Council for Law Reporting

 

Judiciary Training Institute

Recognition award for achieving “Very Good” performance. The Institute coordinated Elections Disputes Resolutions training for judges, conducted CJE training for Magistrates, developed Judiciary Training Master Calendar and organized colloquium for judges and magistrates. This Institute is the Judiciary Training Institute.
