KENYA MAGISTRATES AND JUDGES ASSOCIATION - KMJA
The Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA), a non-profit professional organization, and primarily drawing its membership from serving Judicial Officers was established in 1972 and registered as a Society. Initially, it was registered as Kenya Magistrates Association (KMA) with the objective of safeguarding the welfare of its members. Over time, all magistrates and Kadhis in service became automatic members upon employment. Membership expanded with the affiliation to the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association and the entry of the Judges into the Association albeit not as automatic members but upon subscription.
This necessitated a change of name to KMJA. At the time only a handful of Judges joined the Association, largely due to the prevailing perception and attitude in lieu to carder variation. The Quest for expanding membership to the Judicial Officers necessitated a phenomenal shift and attitude change. As a result in 2007 a spirited effort led to the election of a judge as a chairperson of the Association hence persuading recruitment of more Judges to the Association. KMJA now boasts of membership of all Judges of the Court of Appeal, most Judges of the High Court, all magistrates and all Kadhis.
