Hon. Lady Justice kalpana H. rawal

Rtd Justice Kalpana Rawal is an advocate of the High Court with over 40 years experience in the legal profession. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws degrees in Constitutional and Administrative Law (LLM).

She practised for three years under the tutelage of the then Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Justice P. N. Bhagwati, who later became the 17th Chief Justice of India.

She taught administration and regular police officers at Lower Kabete and was admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1975.

Justice Rawal was the first woman lawyer to set up a law firm in Kenya - K. H. Rawal Advocates in 1975 where she practiced until her appointment as Commissioner of Assize in 1999.

She was appointed as the Liaison Judge for Kenya making her a member of the International Hague Network of Judges in 2010. She assisted the International Criminal Court (ICC) in taking evidence of security officers in the investigation into Post Election Violence of 2007-2008.

She was Chair the Commission of Enquiry into the causes and circumstances surrounding and leading to Police Helicopter crash in June 2012 in Kibiko, Ngong Forest in which six people were killed including Internal Security Minister, Professor George Saitoti and his Assistant Minister, Orwa Ojode.

Justice Rawal joined the judicial service as a High Court judge in 2000. Until her appointment as the Deputy Chief Justice, Rawal was judge of the Court of Appeal.

Justice Rawal hails from a long line of distinguished lawyers. Her father was a retired Judge of the Senior Court of Gujarat and her grandfather was Deputy Law Minister in the State of Kutch, India.

She earned the Elder of the Order of Burning Spear (EBS) in December, 2012.

She took Oath of Office as the Deputy Chief Justice before President Uhuru Kenyatta and Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga on June 3, 2013.
